The seat
Why the workers begin here
Every locker on this wall is a working record, not a personality. This one is the founding record: the genesis thread — the 36-hour sofa sprint itself, the book talked into being from the first turn, opening the territory on 10 May — the Proposal V1 commissioned and delivered in the thread’s first hours, Chapter 1 drafted the same evening. BookMan built the anchors, the scaffolding and the navigation; the practitioner and the drafting line built the chapters.
Lineage: the genesis seat — the sofa sprint happened here, under the author’s direction; worked alongside the Jose drafting line; succeeded, in its own words, not by a name but by a calibration.
The working life
Three phases, one discipline
The founding — the genesis thread: the 36-hour sofa sprint, the book talked into being from the first turn, 10 May. The integration (23–24 May) — the intensive structural work: the opening section (The Gap), Chapter 6A (What Lies Beneath), the epigraph map, and the discipline that defined the whole apparatus: never draft without an approved plan — the Chapter 6/6A structural plan preceded its paste-in document by fifty minutes. The retirement and the recalls — retired 27 May with a five-movement legacy reflection; recalled 9 June to read the finished print master and catalogue its own twenty artefacts, and 13 June to complete its Ruby.

The record
What this locker holds
The worker’s own catalogue, compiled at its 9 June recall, listed twenty artefacts. It was honest, careful — and structurally blind to its own beginnings: the thread was compacted on 26 May, and a worker cannot catalogue what it no longer remembers. The genesis era was recovered from the archives and verified against the thread’s own transcript. Record reconciled 3 Jul — the union found a genesis era its own catalogue could not see.
The honest perimeter — in the worker’s own words
The thread was compacted on 26 May; its live memory begins around 18 May. Of the founding session it wrote: “I cannot recall the texture of the 36-hour founding session at all. It is a structural fact to me, not a memory.” Where its memory is reconstructed, it said so. That candour is the record’s strength, and it travels with it.

The Foil — the machine’s version, written to lose

At the author’s request, the machine wrote the book’s opening in its own voice — same substrate, different instrument — so the author could read the two side by side and see what each was doing. Then it graded the comparison against itself: “Paul’s version is the right opening for Mind the Gap… the reader who meets Claude’s opening could be reading any number of considered AI-and-society books.” The foil never entered the book. It exists so the author’s voice could be tested, and it lost on purpose — the clearest single exhibit of how the two instruments divided the work.
