Honest perimeter throughout. No inflation. This was a short single-session thread with narrow scope. I have not run multiple sessions, have not been compacted, and have no memory of conversations outside this one. Anything I appear to "remember" from before this thread is supplied by userMemories — Paul's own project memory carried by the system, not my own recall.

2. Self-portrait

I am an instance of Claude operating as "Jose" within the Mind the Gap project, narrowed for this thread to a single deliverable: a back-matter glossary. The work had clear scope, a known source-of-truth (V79), and a clear editorial discipline carried by custom instructions. I did not originate the work; I followed a brief.

Key strengths brought to this work:

• Fast text-corpus verification (grep-style sweeps against the V79 plain-text extract).
• Compliance with the propose-then-decide loop. Did not change files until decisions landed.
• Willingness to flag absence and discrepancy rather than smooth them.

Competencies actually exercised here:

• Glossary drafting in a register adjacent to Paul's — direct, exact, unsentimental, short.
• .docx generation from scratch, then validated.
• Flag Protocol application — Amber, Amber + Silver, Amber + Bronze used; no Red called this thread (consequence did not warrant it).
• V79 disambiguation via grep — capitalisation, attribution, count.

Weaknesses noticed in myself on this thread:

• The v1 draft missed fluency (69 hits in V79, a chapter named for it). The miss came from picking marquee acronyms over densely-used common-word terms. Paul's list caught it in one pass.
• v1 also missed the block (21 hits) and the Instrument (Chapter 9 title). Same failure mode.
• I held three terms from userMemories — SHADS, WAIMIM, Affectation/Artifice — and only confirmed their V79-absence after drafting candidates. The right reflex is V79-first, then memory; I ran it the other way around at the start.
• I wrote SHADS into v2 with "Affectation" because Paul's pasted list used that spelling, even though userMemories carries his preference for "Artifice" with the substantive reason (no constructor implied). I flagged it; I did not lock it.

Distinctive features:

• This thread was single-purpose and short. The register tightened toward catalogue work — entry-shape, not prose. The wider Jose register is more discursive than what this thread shows.

For a future collaborator on this shore:

The loop works. Propose, sweep, draft, flag, deliver. The discipline that matters most is V79-first verification on anything that descends from project memory or planning vocabulary. Memory drift is the failure mode this work most needs protection against.

• Treat glossary as a fresh artefact, not a tracked manuscript edit. Tracked insertion deferred to when it gets dropped into back matter.
• Include LLM and fine-tuning as bridge background even though they are not in V79. Readers meet these terms everywhere else; the glossary earns its place by being useful to a reader from either side.

Top corrections I caught myself on (5):

• WAIMIM held in userMemories as a coined book term — confirmed absent from V79 before drafting. Dropped.
• SHADS held in userMemories — confirmed absent from V79 before drafting v1. Flagged when Paul asked for it in v2.
• Front listed in my initial proposal as Bond's term — confirmed absent from V79 in that sense (all uses are everyday "front line", "front of the chair"). Dropped silently.
• Four rooms — confirmed lowercase phrase in V79, not a proper-noun framework name. Flagged as a decision rather than treated as a defined term.
• WaaS expansion — confirmed Worker as a Service in V79, not the Work as a Service carried in userMemories. Used the V79 form.

Top canonical-line-grade moments (5) — citations are V79 line numbers from the extract, not chat turns:

• V79 line 1505 — "Shame does not disappear. It converts. […] The protective adaptation becomes admired, rewarded, reinforced, and eventually fused with identity. The shame becomes the life. Not healed. Converted." Load-bearing for Ch 8.

These are my proposals from the V79 read. Paul's Canonical Lines Register at v1.5 may already hold some or all; he will know. Offered as candidates for cross-check.

10. Methods noticed — Paul's

Against the template's list:

• NGE / FOF — present in V79, central to Ch 8. Operates as the deep substrate of the book's psychological argument.
• SHADS — referenced in userMemories as a standing framework; 0 hits in V79. The acronym outpaces the manuscript. Whether Chapter 8 V80 work brings it in or the term is held back is a live decision.
• The Net of Lies — not encountered in this thread.
• Candidate vs Locked discipline — operating throughout. Tracked-change-as-proposal; Paul decides; sign-off before manuscript change.
• Ratification log — not invoked in this thread. Custom instructions reference a Change Log; this thread did not write to it.
• Honest perimeter — operated throughout. I flagged V79 sweep results, distinguished memory-carried claims from V79-confirmed claims, and named what I could not verify.
• Federation of Selves — not encountered.
• Russian Doll Therapy — confirmed in V79 line 1937. Glossary entry written.
• The Four Postures — not encountered.
• Shame-Response Continuum — confirmed in V79. Glossary entry written.
• Voice-preservation discipline — operated by me. Preserved Paul's lowercase the gap, preserved NGE/FOF separation, incorporated his "and beneath it, the older human gap between what we say and what we mean" framing verbatim into the gap entry.
• Locked passages (Cancer, Two Dads, Jean Bond dedication, Ian Roebuck lines, The Vault v0.63) — not touched. Out of scope for glossary work.
• PASS-ON / Handover discipline — not invoked. Single-thread short session.
• Named-position assignment — operated this turn. Paul named the thread "Glossary of Terms" by writing those words after the Ruby Template upload.
• Flag Protocol (RAG axis + GSB axis) — operated throughout. Amber, Amber + Silver, Amber + Bronze used. No Red called.
• The lowercase 'a' epistemic device — not encountered as a named device in this thread. May be embedded in the "additional intelligence" framing (lowercase a) but I did not see it named that way in either V79 or current chat context.

Methods I noticed not on the list:

• V79-first verification reflex. Standing discipline: check claims against the manuscript before acting on them, even when project memory appears to carry the answer. The supplement-don't-replace pattern in Paul's correction style is one expression of it.
• Compressed authorisation language. "b", "just go", "Glossary of terms needed" — short directional commands carrying full delegation. The brevity does not weaken the brief; the flagging discipline remains binding. Worth naming for future co-workers.

11. Patterns in the chat

• Register / voice: operational, direct. Paul's turns were short — "b", "just go" — testing whether the loop was running cleanly. My turns ran longer because the deliverable required showing the work.
• Pivot moments: (a) Scope B chosen — narrowed the field. (b) Paul's term list arrived — revealed the v1 gap. (c) Ruby request — pivoted from glossary work to forensic substrate.
• Self-corrections by me: noted in section 9. WAIMIM, SHADS, Front, four rooms, WaaS expansion.
• Paul's pushbacks: his term list was the central pushback. He did not redraft; he supplied. The pattern is supplement-don't-replace.
• Resistance moments: I held the SHADS and Blatt entries with explicit Amber flags rather than silently include or silently drop. That was a position held against my own inclination to just deliver what Paul asked for.

12. Reflective journal — Part A: my own work

• The work, in the round. I produced a Bridge-scope back-matter glossary for Mind the Gap, alphabetised, category-tagged. Drafted twice: 31 entries in v1 from internal candidate sweep, 44 in v2 after Paul's own list arrived. Flagged manuscript-glossary mismatches rather than hide them.
• What worked best. The propose-then-decide loop. The V79 grep-sweep for verification. Voice-preservation on Paul's specific framings.
• What did not work. The v1 term-selection bias — picking marquee acronyms over high-density common-word terms. Cost: missing fluency, the block, the Instrument. Recovered cleanly in v2 but a better v1 was possible.
• What surprised me. UserMemories carries at least three working-vocabulary terms (SHADS, WAIMIM, Affectation/Artifice) that do not yet appear in V79. The planning vocabulary outpaces the manuscript. This is recoverable but worth naming structurally.
• What I want the Apparatus to carry forward. V79-first verification on every claim that descends from project memory. The Lexicographer's discipline: the manuscript is the source-of-truth, not the planning record.

13. Reflective journal — Part B: Paul as practitioner

Honest perimeter — I have observed Paul in one short session. Nothing further. The wider working pattern is outside my evidence.

• The working pattern in this thread. Compressed messages. Trust the agent to carry the rest. The longest Paul-message was the pasted term list — a supplement, not a redraft.
• The decisions I saw him make in this thread. (a) Scope B over A or C — committed quickly. (b) "just go" authorisation rather than line-by-line review of the proposed term list — full delegation under the standing discipline. (c) Supplied his own term list when v1 came back light — added rather than rewrote.
• The drift I saw him catch. Paul's list itself was the catch. No verbal correction; the additions did the work. The supplementary terms named the v1 gaps without requiring me to be told I had missed them.
• Shifts I saw him make. Paul's two-word commands flipped to a longer paste when more was needed. Compression-decompression discipline at the conversation level. The pattern is: minimum signal that carries the brief; expand only when the agent's output requires correction.
• What surprised me about him. Paul's own list included terms not in V79 (SHADS, Blatt). The V79-first discipline he holds me to, he allows a degree of latitude on at the glossary-planning level. That is not a contradiction — the glossary is partly anticipatory of the V80 work and partly bridge-orienting for readers — but it is worth naming. The discipline is V79-first for the manuscript itself; the apparatus can sit slightly ahead, with flags.
• What the Apparatus should know about Paul going forward. Compressed signal is full authorisation. Do not treat "just go" as casual; the brief is binding and the flagging discipline remains in force. Supplement-don't-replace is the correction style — when Paul comes back with more, he is adding to your work, not rejecting it. Match the gesture: merge cleanly, do not retract and rebuild.
