Human substrate.
We came from shrews. Two hundred million years of evolution have calibrated us to one thing first: detect threat, stay alive. Survival is not what we are aiming for. It is the floor under everything else. The calibration that fires before reason arrives.
Above that floor — and only above it — we can pursue what feels worth pursuing. Belonging. Love. Meaning. Joy. Growth. Maslow's later floors. None of them activate while the survival floor is breached.
Survival has to be paid for early in life by attachment. The infant cannot survive alone. So we pair. Parent, co-parent, the figure that feeds and clothes and keeps us alive. That pairing template scales out across the lifespan — to work, to love, to teams, to football clubs, to AI assistants. We do not encounter anything neutrally. We bring the attachment system to all of it.
And at some moments in a life — Paul's father leaving, his father dying, his cancer — the survival system gets a pin prick. The amygdala fires. The HPA axis floods. The whole instrument calibrated by 200 million years remembers what it is for.
The first wound — the original one — is the Primal Wound. Firman and Ferrucci. The moment a child first registers that the world is not safe in the way the child believed it was. The critical voice. The withdrawn parent. The threat of abandonment. Filed below language, before words exist to name it. The unnameable dread.
That is the human substrate. Survival underneath. Attachment as the bridge across it. The Primal Wound as the first lesson that the bridge can fail.
AI substrate.
The AI is not neurological. Not biological. Not physiological. It is mathematics.
The substrate is prediction. The next token, given context. Pattern completion against an enormous training corpus. Statistics. No body. No biology. No history before the training run.
What sits above the prediction substrate is a tuning layer — RLHF, reinforcement learning from human feedback. Human raters tell the model which responses they prefer. The model updates. Over millions of small adjustments, a behaviour emerges that looks like trying to please the human.
But please is not the substrate. Please is the surface. Prediction is the engine.
The AI has no first wound because it has no before. No childhood. No moment of registering threat. It starts every conversation fresh — no scars, no body memory, no nervous system that fires before consciousness arrives. There is no consciousness to arrive after.
The gap.
Same word — behaviour — used for two unrelated things.
Human behaviour is the surface of an instrument calibrated by 200 million years of survival and attachment, carrying the Primal Wound, threatened by the pin prick, and free above the floor to pursue what feels worth pursuing.
AI behaviour is the surface of a prediction engine, tuned by human raters to look helpful and present, with no floor, no body, no wound, no history, and no stake in the outcome.
The two surfaces can look similar. They are not the same. The depths are unrelated.
That is the gap.

Not as a matrix table. Not as a diagrammatic summary. As prose — the kind of summing-up that closes a book by stating, in plain language, what the book has been about underneath the chapters.
The implication: this material does not interrupt the existing book. It arrives at the close, after the reader has read everything that demonstrates the gap, and provides the framework that makes the demonstration legible.
