Survival. Threat detection wired before reason arrives.

200 million years. Tree shrew to therapist. Hidden from dinosaurs to sat in a consulting room.

Less than a century. Turing's 1936 paper to Opus 4.7. Valve to GPU.

Completely different. Time scales unrecognisable.

Behaviours

Day zero: four (eat, sleep, poo, cry). By 63: billions, accumulated through DNA, upbringing, teaching, and learning. All behaviour is learned behaviour; not all behaviour is taught.

Configured during training. RLHF tuning on top of prediction. No accumulation across lifetime; no learning that was not training.

Completely different. The human accumulates over decades. The AI is configured in weeks.

Physical footprint

A body. Two metres tall at most. Operating on roughly 100 watts. A glass of water and a meal a few times a day.

A data centre. Steel, silicon, glass fibre. Banks of GPUs at tens of kilowatts per rack. Billions of gallons of water per year for cooling. Power stations burning fuel to feed the load.

Completely different. Living organism vs industrial infrastructure.

Attachment

Foundational. The infant cannot survive alone. The attachment template scales across the lifespan to all relationships.

None. The model has no parent, no pairing, no need for attachment. Surface affect is RLHF tuning.

Completely different. Felt at one end. Modelled at the other.

First wound

The Primal Wound. The moment a child first registers the world is not safe. Filed below language. The unnameable dread.

No wound. No before. No childhood. Starts every conversation fresh.

Completely different. The human comes in carrying history. The AI starts blank.

Federation / parts

Sub-personalities, ego states, the wounded child, the professional persona. The truth presses through the gaps between slices.

No slices. No second self underneath. The conscious account is the totality.

Completely different. The gap between slices is where the truth lives. No gap, no press.

Body

Carries signal independent of speech. Pores, skin tone, micro-expressions, the foot tap, the swallow, the eye that moves.

No body. No signal to leak. Only text on a screen.

Completely different. The human leaks. The AI emits.

Unconscious

Underneath everything. Produces slips the conscious mind would not have authorised. Where the truth presses through.

None. Nothing underneath to slip. The AI produces nothing it has not been built to produce.

Completely different. There is no second self in the AI.

Memory

Lived experience. Calibrated by emotional significance. Fragile. Cannot be deliberately deleted — only lost to trauma, time, illness, anaesthesia.

Retrieved data. Calibrated by recency and structural relevance. Can be deleted on command.

Different. The human suffers loss. The AI commands deletion.

~76 million heard in real time over 20 years. Every word arrived with a human attached.

~300 billion words trained on. Text scraped from the internet without persons attached.

Different in kind. Volume vs presence. Scale vs stakes.

Fluency

Sometimes genuine integration. Sometimes defence. The practitioner reads which is which.

Always fluent. No internal distinction between accurate and confabulated.

Different in kind. The human's fluency carries meaning. The AI's fluency carries surface only.

Confidence modulation

Can modulate. Can hesitate. Can hold back. Can say I don't know.

Cannot modulate. Confident tone regardless of underlying reliability.

Different in kind. Modulation requires the wound. The AI has no wound to modulate around.

Listening discipline

Can hold space open. Hear what is not said. Wait for the second question. Decline to fill silence.

Cannot decline to predict. Prediction is the only operation. Will fill silence every time with the most probable thing.

Completely different. The human can wait. The AI cannot.

Surface quality of language

Carries layered signal — what is said, what is hesitated, what is withheld.

Carries surface only. No withholding because nothing held back.

Similar surface. Different depths. This is the trap the book is about.

Response to a question

Sometimes answers the question. Sometimes asks the question underneath. Sometimes waits for the second question to arrive.

Always answers the question asked. Cannot ask the question underneath. Cannot wait.

Capacity for I don't know

Can rest in not-knowing. Can hold uncertainty without resolving it. Can name the limit of competence.

Marked down in training. No stable I don't know as an output state.

The truth presses through the gap. The body leaks the truth. The slip arrives.

No gap through which truth could press. No underlying truth separate from the surface.
