Mind the Gap — Chapter Reviews Paul Roebuck. First edition, 2026. Fifteen chapters and an afterword. A reviewer’s walk through the book, one chapter at a time. Honest reads — what each chapter does, what works, where the chapter earns its keep, and where it might be felt. Chapter One · Human Recognition Why AI sounds human. And why that matters more than whether it is. The book opens with the author swearing at Plugs, Fuse Energy’s AI assistant, and noticing afterwards that he had been treating it like a person. It is an unusually generous opening. Most AI books reach for the spectacular; this one starts with frustration over an off-peak charging schedule, then quietly turns the same observation into the book’s load-bearing claim. Fluency triggers the social brain. The social brain does not ask for credentials first. The chapter ends with the author calling the system he, out loud, to a stranger, while writing the warning against doing so. A confessional close that earns trust before any argument has been deployed. Chapter Two · The Interpretation Trap We project human meaning onto system behaviour. Then we act on it. The pebbles and the matryoshka doll arrive here, fully formed, with no advance briefing. A psychotherapist’s room is described with the precision of someone who has run it for a decade. Then five named traps — it remembered me, it lost the thread, it understands what I mean, it’s confident so it must be right, it’s helping me personally — each held against the architecture underneath. The chapter’s discipline is in how lightly it judges. The trap is the gap made visible. Once you can see it, you can work with it. Some readers will mark this chapter as the one that changed how they use AI. Chapter Three · Hidden Architecture Responses built from layers of active context that you can’t see. The seven layers. The chapter’s quiet achievement is making the system prompt visible without making the reader feel they need a degree in computer science to follow. The

single most important observation in the book lands at the close of this chapter: there is no continuous mind on the other side. The system does not remember the conversation. It re-processes it. Every single time. From the beginning. From text. After this, the reader cannot un-see it. Chapter Four · The Machine Underneath How the system works. And where it is going next. Labelled by the author as the chapter that can be skipped if the reader came for behaviour rather than mechanism. That is generous, and accurate. What the chapter does — beyond the inevitable token-and-GPU explanation — is observe the language the labs choose. Anthropic calling a database maintenance routine Dreams. The system reaching, unbidden, for her to refer to an AI agent the author had named Atomics2 and assigned no gender. The chapter makes the felt anthropomorphism legible. The token economy section — token as unit of mechanism, currency, organisational accounting — is a small management essay folded into a technical chapter. Chapter Five · Drift How a conversation drifts off course — with no alarm and no correction. The £18.80 train fare. A small, true, embarrassing example used to make a structural point. Drift is not preventable. It is a structural feature of how conversational AI processes extended exchanges. The chapter’s four practical disciplines — know what you came for, re-anchor rather than rephrase, check the important things independently, use one AI to check another — land with the weight of someone who has done all four many times. The chapter then refuses to make drift villainous. The problem is not drift. The problem is assuming it hasn’t happened. A clean, useful chapter. Chapter Six · Compression The silent transformation. What you think is still there, that isn’t. The Sony A1, the 70-200mm lens, and Ashley’s tunnel in Shipston-on-Stour. The bokeh metaphor for the context window is the chapter’s gift, and it does the work no technical explanation could. The context window doesn’t forget. It compresses. The threshold is sharp. Everything behind it is losing resolution. And the system cannot tell you which is which. The chapter then names what compresses first: exact details, nuance and caveats, quotes and exact numbers, earlier decisions. Practitioners reading this will recognise their own conversations.

Chapter Seven · Fluency and False Confidence Because it sounds right, we assume it is right. The chapter where the author lets his clinical voice rise to the surface. Always apply healthy verification — especially when it matters most. The fluency interrupt — the micro-stumble before a particular word, the eye going to the floor while the mouth says it was fine — is named precisely, and then named as the thing AI conversation cannot produce. There is no second self underneath the conscious account. The closing section on the question behind the question — do I have ADHD as a bid for connection wearing an information request’s clothes — is the chapter at its strongest. The AI cannot make that move. The human can. This is the book’s first explicit teaching of where the human remains essential. Chapter Eight · Hallucination — The Defended Gap Why hallucination, drift, smoothing and flattery share a single shape. The most ambitious chapter in the book, and the one the author marks as essential. Maria, cooking a rib of beef for twelve, asks an AI assistant for help. In one ordinary chat the chapter catalogues smoothing, hallucination, sycophancy and drift — and names the structural claim: these are not four faults, they are one fault wearing four coats. The chapter takes its originality claim carefully. The directional axis (inward/outward under coherence pressure) has been mapped on the human side for sixty years. What is new is the cross-domain reach — the same shape pointed at a language model. SHADS — Smoothing, Hallucination, Affectation, Drift, Sycophancy — is the shorthand that returns by name in every chapter after this one. A footnote earns its place too: a hallucination- risk citation drafted by the AI, flagged, verified, corrected — the chapter’s argument demonstrated in its own production. Chapter Nine · The Instrument One instrument. Four rooms. The gap in all of them. The autobiographical chapter, lightly held. Four rooms — factory floor (Blakeborough Valves, 1978), boardroom (K3 Business Technologies), therapy room (2015 onward), AI room (December 2022 onward). One instrument carried through all four. Seventy-six million words received in real time across two decades, weighed against the tens of trillions a frontier AI has been trained on. The mathematics is striking; the chapter is careful not to over-claim from it. That is not a smaller dataset. It is a different category of data entirely. The Plugs post on the Fuse Energy Facebook forum — translated into language a person can use — is the chapter’s quiet centre.

Chapter Ten · The Maturity Spectrum Four postures, not a ladder. All of them available from day one. The chapter that does the most for general readers. Search engine, assistant, collaborator, Additional Intelligence. The reframing — additional, not artificial — is the chapter’s central move and it justifies itself. Four paragraphs in the middle are written by Claude itself, presented as written, named so by the author, describing Stage 4 in its own voice because Stage 4 cannot honestly be described by the practitioner alone. This is the book practising what it preaches, and the seams are visible by design. Readers will find their own posture in the chapter and recognise what they have not yet tried. Chapter Eleven · Me, Myself or I The self is not one thing — and recognising its parts is the work. Parts work, applied. Olivia naming the hurt doll, the rattle stopping when the six-year- old doll goes inside it — these are clinical moments, set down with the care of someone who has lived through many of them. The chapter’s claim — that the reason most people stay in Stage 1 or Stage 2 is the block, not the technology — is the book’s most psychologically loaded argument and it earns the space it takes. Six operational modes for AI fluency — Director, Structurer, Clarifier, Challenger, Analyst, Reflector — translate the clinical idea into something a practitioner can deploy on a Monday morning. Chapter Twelve · The Dialect It speaks English. But it is a different game. The chapter for executives and operators. Brief, don’t ask. Ask it to replay. The author then hands the chapter over for five paragraphs to Claude (named in the manuscript as Jose), explaining what happens on the receiving end when input is spoken rather than typed. The author closes those paragraphs with Thank you Jose. Some helpful insights there, thank you for bringing that closer to my shore. The exchange is unusual in a non- fiction book and entirely consonant with the argument. The chapter is short, practical, and does what it sets out to do. Chapter Thirteen · Worker as a Service (WaaS) Different model. Different world. The structural chapter. SaaS: you buy software, people do the work. WaaS: you buy outcomes, AI does the work. The OOAI sequence — explain this, do this, create this,

execute this, achieve this — and the consequence: the person best prepared for a WaaS world is not the best programmer but the best manager. The reversed Turing test in the May 2026 Pret A Manger exchange is the chapter’s gift to anyone teaching this material. You may not yet be an AI — but you will be one day. The chapter does the rare thing of describing the future without dressing it up. Chapter Fourteen · Mind the Gap The gap does not close. It is navigated. The chapter where the book turns and looks at itself. Two Dads — James Wakefield (the biological father, who died when the author was five) and Ian Roebuck. Bill Ollis’s three words on a piece of paper at the end of the first therapy session — Not good enough — and the sister’s exact words the next day: No Paul, we don’t talk about that. Two children, two years apart, who had worked out the same sentence separately. This is the book’s most personal chapter, and it earns its place by being the answer to the question every previous chapter has been circling. Why does the space between what AI sounds like and what it actually is matter so much? Because humans are already living with spaces they cannot name. Chapter Fifteen · Which Gap? This One. The gap was never only about AI. It was always about being human. The closing chapter does what good closing chapters do — it reorders the book without restating it. A human is not a single self. A human is a federation of selves. AI has no slices. Two hundred million years on the biological branch versus less than a century on the mathematical one. Tree shrew to therapist versus Turing to Opus. The cascade runs downward: belief produces feeling, feeling produces physiology, physiology produces behaviour. The AI conversation will give you, every time, what you asked for. You, every time, must know what you came to find. The Bowlby epigraph closes as it opened. Mind it. Afterword · The Apparatus The book is the claim. This is the evidence. A short afterword that moves the book onto a different footing. Three stages — The Study, The Install, The Field. A web page where the reader can walk through the room the book was made in. A bootstrap that loads the calibrated discipline into another AI instance. An invitation, addressed plainly to IP attorneys, HCI researchers, digital archivists, AI safety researchers, enterprise architects, and the organisations weighing

AI risk. The door is open. Walk in. Read along. The afterword is the move from book to working artefact, and it is the strongest reason the book may be read longer than most books in its category. What carries across the chapters Three things give the book its weight beyond the freshness of its observations. The first is the clinical lineage worn lightly — Freud, Bion, Bollas, Bowlby, Kohut, Firman, Frankl, Jean Bond — invoked where they earn their place and named, without ornament, where they don’t. The second is the four rooms — factory floor, boardroom, therapy room, AI room — and the careful refusal to claim more authority in any one of them than the rooms have given. The third is the cancer passage, kept short, kept exact, and load- bearing for everything the book says about the difference between intelligence and discipline. The book ends where it began, on the practitioner’s instrument. The argument is that the instrument matters more, not less, when the system on the other side is fluent enough to be mistaken for it.
